Improvisation and Leading Change

A hand stops a row of falling wooden blocks from knocking over a row of upright wooden blocks on a dark gray surface.
  • As organizations navigate constant change, leaders must adapt, connect, and respond in real time. Improvisation—long valued in the theater—has emerged as a powerful practice for developing these same leadership capacities.

This experiential program brings the core principles of improv into the world of organizational leadership. Participants explore how the mindset of “Yes, And” fosters creativity, agility, and trust. They practice embracing uncertainty, reading a room, and turning unexpected challenges into opportunities for innovation.

  • Improvisation teaches leaders to listen fully, stay present, strengthen both verbal and nonverbal communication, and build upon the ideas of others. The practice develops flexibility, spontaneity, and emotional intelligence—all critical for leading through complexity and change.

In fact, a study of improv training showed increases over time in creative self-efficacy and psychological well-being for participants, evidence that this isn’t just “fun training,” but something that changes how your mind and body respond.

In short: when you rehearse improvisationally, you’re not just learning “techniques” — you’re rewiring your capacity to show up in uncertainty, adapt in the moment, and lead with more presence and relational power.

  • Through a series of guided improvisational exercises, participants will:

    • Step outside their comfort zones and explore new dimensions of expression and presence

    • Experience the collective creativity that arises from “Yes, And” thinking

    • Create and present a collaborative team “deliverable” that demonstrates the principles of trust, responsiveness, and co-creation

    • Reflect on how these same principles can elevate performance, engagement, and relationships in the workplace

The session concludes with a practical discussion on integrating improvisational tools and mindsets into leadership and team dynamics.

  • Participants will gain:

    • A “Yes, And” mindset that transforms challenging encounters into opportunities for growth

    • Stronger listening and relational skills that build trust and alignment

    • The ability to think on their feet, adapt messaging, and maintain composure under pressure

    • Greater vocal, physical, and emotional presence to increase impact and influence

    • Practical strategies for applying improvisation techniques in professional settings

  • Duration: 3 or 4 hours
    Delivery: In-person
    Participants: 10–100

  • This program is designed for anyone who leads, collaborates, or communicates in dynamic environments. It is especially valuable for leaders navigating change, teams seeking to strengthen connection and creativity, and organizations fostering a culture of openness and innovation.

Leadership Storytelling

Silhouette of a group of people walking on a hill at sunset with a colorful sky in the background.
  • Information alone doesn’t create change. People act when they feel connected—to a purpose, to one another, to the story they’re part of. That’s why today’s most effective leaders know how to move people, not just inform them. Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools for sharing insight, building relationships, and inspiring commitment, even through uncertainty.

Research backs this up: stories are remembered up to 22 times more than facts alone and neuroscientific studies show that while facts activate narrow neural pathways, stories engage multiple regions—creating “neural coupling” between speaker and listener‍. When data is woven into narrative, audiences are not only informed—they are moved. According to one study, narrative framing can increase persuasion by up to 50 % over data-only presentations.

This immersive program explores storytelling as a core leadership capability. Participants will learn to use narrative to help others feel seen, inspired, and part of something bigger—to turn strategy into a shared sense of purpose and possibility. Through a blend of frameworks, demonstration, and guided rehearsal, leaders gain techniques to engage audiences at any level.

  • This is not a lecture—it is an active laboratory for leadership communication. Participants practice, perform, and refine stories drawn from their own experiences that have relevance to their professional lives. Each session combines:

    • Frameworks for narrative design and delivery

    • Demonstrations of high-impact storytelling techniques

    • Rehearsal and coaching for real-time skill development

    • Peer feedback to reinforce learning and build coaching capacity

  • Participants will gain:

    • Ability to craft stories that move people toward a shared vision

    • Strategies to distill complex ideas into memorable messages

    • Techniques to create anticipation and connect on an emotional level

    • Confidence to communicate with authenticity and authority

    • Coaching and feedback skills to elevate team collaboration

  • Duration: Half-day (3–4 hours) or Full-day (7–8 hours)
    Delivery: In-person or virtual
    Participants: 6–50 leaders per cohort

    • Senior and emerging leaders seeking to strengthen their executive presence and influence

    • Teams preparing for pivotal presentations or organizational change initiatives

    • HR and talent leaders developing communication and coaching capability across the enterprise

  • By the conclusion of the program, participants will have a repeatable process for creating and delivering stories that inspire confidence, create shared purpose, and spur motivation—skills that extend far beyond the podium to every aspect of leadership.

Make Meaning. Build Connection. Move People To Action.

Margie is wonderful…able to bring her considerable talent, along with her great heart, intelligence and presence, to her work. I was moved by the work she did with our school leaders, and they left today feeling empowered by the risks they took in telling their stories.”

Customized Training and Meeting Facilitation

A window display with a neon sign that reads, 'What is your story?' inside an office with chairs, desk, and posters on the wall.

I start by listening—really listening—to what’s keeping you up at night. Then I design a practical, high-impact experience that moves your people and culture forward.

Each engagement is built around the real challenges of leadership in a complex world. My approach fosters what I call a “culture of rehearsal”—an environment where leaders continually refine their skills, experiment with new approaches, and commit to making each other better. When the program ends, your team leaves equipped with both the inspiration and strategies to deepen the learning on their own.

I also partner with leadership teams to design and facilitate offsite meetings that build alignment, momentum, and trust.

Programs can be delivered virtually or in person, for large or small groups, and are known for their energy, insight, and practical outcomes.
